Smart coastal city
Sahil — meaning "coast" in Arabic — is one of Somaliland's six administrative regions, stretching along the Gulf of Aden between Awdal to the northwest and Sanaag to the east. Its landscape rises from coral-sand beaches and semi-desert coastal plains through acacia scrublands to the cool Sheikh highlands and the rugged Golis mountain range in the south. This varied terrain gives Sahil both strategic maritime access and fertile inland valleys. Berbera, the regional capital, sits on a natural deep-water harbour that has anchored trade in the Horn of Africa for more than a millennium.

Berbera Port is Somaliland's principal deep-water seaport, recently expanded with modern container terminals capable of handling large vessels. It serves as the primary gateway for imports and exports across the Horn of Africa.
Sahil anchors Somaliland's livestock economy. Millions of sheep and goats pass through Berbera annually, bound for markets in the Arabian Peninsula via world-class quarantine and export facilities.
The Gulf of Aden's rich waters sustain vibrant artisanal and commercial fishing. Berbera's markets supply fresh tuna, shark, and lobster to domestic consumers and international buyers.
From Ottoman-era Old Berbera and the white-sand beaches of Batalaale to the cool highland retreats of Sheikh, Sahil holds growing potential for coastal and cultural tourism.
Berbera does not merely serve Somaliland — it is becoming a regional logistics hub. The Berbera Corridor, a modernised road and logistics network linking the port to the Ethiopian highlands, positions the city as an alternative trade route for landlocked Ethiopia and the wider East African interior.
With the expanded Berbera International Airport and the growing Special Economic Zone, global shipping lines, logistics firms, and industrial developers are increasingly choosing Berbera as the most efficient maritime gateway between the Red Sea and East Africa.
From the historic Ottoman quarter and the cool highland town of Sheikh, to the white-sand beaches of Batalaale and the deep-water Port of Berbera, Sahil Region is where Somaliland's heritage meets its economic future.
